When homeowners invest in solar energy, they are often attracted by the promise of greater energy independence, lower electricity bills, and protection against future utility rate increases.


However, one common misconception is that solar panels can simply be installed and forgotten.


While solar panels have no moving parts and are designed to withstand outdoor conditions for many years, they still require periodic care and inspection. “Low maintenance” does not mean “no maintenance.”


A properly maintained solar system can operate more efficiently, identify faults before they become serious, and achieve its expected service life of approximately 25 to 30 years.


Here are some of the key maintenance considerations every solar system owner should understand.


1. Bird Droppings and Surface Contamination


Bird droppings are one of the most common causes of localised shading on solar panels.

When droppings accumulate on the glass surface, they can form an opaque layer that blocks sunlight from reaching the solar cells underneath. Unlike dust, bird droppings may not be easily washed away by rainfall, particularly when they have hardened over time.


Solar panels are also commonly installed at a relatively low angle. This means rainwater may not flow across the surface with enough force to remove stubborn dirt, droppings, leaves or other debris.


Even a small shaded area may affect the performance of an individual panel and, depending on the system design, may also reduce the output of the surrounding panels.

Regular visual checks can help identify areas with significant dirt or contamination before they begin affecting system performance.


2. Cleaning Solar Panels Safely


Although solar panel cleaning may appear straightforward, improper cleaning methods can damage the panels, affect the roof or create serious safety risks.


Using unsuitable chemicals, abrasive cleaning tools or high-pressure water may scratch the panel glass, damage protective coatings or force water into electrical components.


Cleaning should therefore be carried out using appropriate equipment and methods recommended by the panel manufacturer or system installer.


Safety Must Come First


Homeowners should not attempt to access rooftop solar panels without the correct safety equipment, training and access arrangements.


Wet roofs can become extremely slippery, while steep-pitched or multi-storey roofs create an additional fall risk. There is also a possibility of damaging roof tiles, waterproofing systems, electrical cables or mounting equipment while moving around the installation.


Ground-mounted solar systems may be easier to inspect and clean safely. However, rooftop systems should generally be maintained by trained professionals who are familiar with solar equipment and working-at-height requirements.


3. Engage Your Original Solar Installer


Where possible, contact the company that originally installed the solar system.


Your installer should already be familiar with the system layout, panel model, inverter, mounting structure and electrical configuration. They may also understand the specific maintenance conditions required to protect the manufacturer’s warranties.


Many installers provide annual or biannual maintenance packages. These services may include:


  • Professional panel cleaning

  • Inspection of panels, cables and connectors

  • Checks on mounting structures and roof penetrations

  • Inverter inspection

  • System performance testing

  • Monitoring and fault analysis

  • Identification of visible damage or deterioration

  • Maintenance and performance reports


While professional maintenance involves an additional cost, it reduces the risk of personal injury and accidental damage. It also allows potential defects to be identified and documented properly.


Where warranty claims are required, having professional inspection and maintenance records may also make the process more straightforward.


4. Monitor the System’s Performance


Modern solar systems are commonly connected to an online monitoring platform or mobile application.


Homeowners should review the system’s performance periodically rather than assuming the system is operating correctly simply because the panels are still on the roof.


A sudden or unexplained decrease in energy generation may indicate several possible issues, including:


  • Dirt or shading on the panels

  • Inverter faults

  • Communication or monitoring failures

  • Loose or damaged electrical connections

  • Panel degradation

  • Changes in surrounding vegetation or building structures

  • Tripped electrical protection devices


Solar output will naturally vary depending on weather conditions, cloud cover and seasonal changes. However, significant or prolonged reductions should be investigated by a qualified solar professional.


5. Arrange Periodic Professional Inspections


Regular monitoring and occasional cleaning are important, but they do not replace a full technical inspection.


Even when a system appears to be operating normally, certain issues may not be visible to the homeowner. These may include loose connections, damaged cables, moisture intrusion, corrosion, overheating components or deterioration of the mounting structure.


A professional inspection every three to five years is generally a sensible precaution, although more frequent checks may be required depending on the environment, system age and installation conditions.


Properties located near construction sites, industrial areas, coastal environments or places with heavy bird activity may require more regular maintenance.


A comprehensive inspection can help confirm that:


  • The panels remain secure and undamaged

  • The mounting system is stable

  • Electrical connections are safe

  • Cables and isolators remain in good condition

  • The inverter is operating correctly

  • The roof and waterproofing remain intact

  • The system is generating electricity within the expected performance range

Solar panels are designed to be reliable and durable, but long-term performance still depends on proper care.


Routine monitoring, safe cleaning and periodic professional inspections can help prevent avoidable energy losses, extend the useful life of the equipment and reduce the risk of unexpected repair costs.


Homeowners should think of solar maintenance in the same way they approach servicing for other major property systems. It may not require constant attention, but it should not be ignored.
